before and after stucco

H
abitat for Humanity approached Skillful Means with a design for two railroad duplex units filling most of a large lot in Yuba City. We constructed a site model and saw that two-story units would leave more yard space and, properly staggered on the site, would create generous individual yards and gardens. In this flat valley town, a good second story offers views and access to sunlight, as well as privacy for bedrooms.

Habitat asked for three bedrooms and one and a half baths to fit into 1000 square feet. Our design features an open plan first floor living/dining area with equal access and views to yards in front and back, large windows on the South, and generous overhanging awnings and porches to shield from summer sun (not shown yet).

Skillful Means led workshops attended by both Democratic and Republican Congressmen, and a full dress Honor Guard from the local air base. Two units are being constructed. One has the first coat of stucco applied, the other has bales installed and is awaiting willing plasterers.
