We were asked to help design and build a round hut for meditation
in a backyard garden. The design went through many stages and took shape
following dreams, ideas from others, and serendipity. The work began in
the summer was completed in winter with the help of many friends, young
and old.
The building is set into a hillside, with about two-thirds of the back side
is below grade, an experiment. A beautiful carved door protects the entrance.
The living roof, covered in rosemary, is supported by eight gently
curved beams which meet at a central light hole. At each bay we put
a small window or a niche. The windows are high and offer small glimpses
of the garden. The walls are plastered with lime and sand.
The room is round, turning inward.
The mud floor sits directly on the earth.
