While Skillful Means was
building the Cottage at Shenoa, we
were asked to design a bath house for the campground at the retreat center.
The center already was considering a rectangular design which looked pretty
much like a rest stop on I-5. Our octagonal plan met with enthusiasm.
Remarkably, the new layout required less than two-thirds of the square
footage because space is used more efficiently in radial plans, like a
roundhouse or Shaker Barn. The hovering roof of the bathhouse allows
views of tall redwood trees from each shower and toilet room, and each
room shares in the airy skylight/cuppola at the center. The Shenoa construction crew did a fine building job, with careful attention to detail. Set among the tall redwoods of the campground, the bathhouse has become a welcome fixture at Shenoa.
