The Bench

The Bench at the Depot is a winding, colorful 200 foot long straw bale bench at the Davis, California Amtrack train station. It's a favorite with kids.

The Depot was part of a refurbishing of the old train station for the City of Davis.
The bench is meant to last a long time, and Skillful Means worked closely with the architect Jon Hammond in developing construction details.

Working under the guidance of artist Sayako Dairiki, our crew set the thousands of colored granite tiles and applied the multi-colored finish coat to the bench. We were entertained daily with comments from travelers--which ranged from hearty encouragement to shocked disbelief.

The Bench was designed by Indago Architects
and built by Skillful Means.
