Tree View

The tall oaks surrounding this house have great appeal for the many birds in the Sacramento Valley. Raquel and Greg, who have lived and done field work in the Costa Rican rain forest, wanted a bedroom "in the trees".

The house steps up in height to a second floor master bedroom at tree level. Although the home is modest in size, it has the spacious feel and variety of a much larger dwelling.

The house recalls the style of many farm buildings in California's rice country. This building is dynamic and responsive to its environment, with low heating and cooling requirements.

The owners wanted to feel connected to the landscape when inside the house, yet still feel cozy and protected.

All rooms but one have windows on three sides, and the views are different and varied from different places in the house. Seen from so many different angles, the flat landscape is beautiful and dynamic.
